TRT treatment involves the administration of ‘artificial’ testosterone to regulate your hormone levels. This can be provided in various ways, including pellets, injections, patches, and pills. Your healthcare provider will work closely with you to decide which option and dose is best for you, and to avoid potentially harmful side effects. This includes thorough testing, both pre-treatment and during.
If you’re going through the NHS, you’ll typically speak to a GP or be referred to an endocrinologist. However, it’s rare to find a GP who has adequate knowledge around TRT and testosterone deficiency, and endocrinologist referrals are notoriously hard to secure. If you’re pursuing a private service, you’ll often speak to a men’s health specialist who has the relevant medical training and qualifications.
Both aim to correct hormone imbalances, just different types. Generally, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used for women to replenish oestrogen and progestogen, whereas testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is typically used by men. However, this fails to factor in things such as Free T levels, SHBG, LH, FSH and also symptoms, medical history. These can all play a part in diagnosis, even if testosterone levels appear ‘normal’.

Blood tests are necessary to determine your testosterone levels, with samples often taken at home and then sent for lab analysis. It’s best that any blood samples for testosterone testing are taken in the morning, as this is when testosterone levels are at their highest.
According to research, testosterone deficiency in adults ranges from 10-40% globally across different populations. While research confirms that low testosterone levels can be more common in certain people due to various factors, anyone can develop symptoms of testosterone deficiency regardless of their age, occupation, or lifestyle. Age is the most widely accepted factor in increasing the likelihood of low testosterone, as men’s levels typically decline steadily by 1% a year from the age of 30.
